Below are links to lists of some of the Japanese animations, movies, OVAs, and TV series that I happen to like and what little I know about them. I won't bother commenting on the films of Miyazaki because there are some very nice web sites on his films. Films such as Totoro and Whisper of the Heart rank in my top 10. Spoilers ahead.

One of my pet peeves is procuring anime merchandise and books. To get stuff at reasonable prices, try the bookstores and toy stores that cater to the expatriate Japanese community. The stuff at conventions is sometimes incredibly marked up, although there are some bargains. Some of the local (LA) places I've had luck at are listed below. Also listed are some reference books:

  • Dolls

I try avoid using copyrighted art work as much as possible, so I substitute photos of dolls. Anyway, there's an old tradition of collecting dolls in Japan (just about every Japanese American household used to have a traditional doll or so in display in a glass case) so I'm just obeying the ethnic imperative. Someday I'll start blowing money on the traditional ningyoo, but until then I'll have to make do with plush, vinyl and plastic.
