Nov 19 Restored 1935 Film about Bali: LEGONG (Dance of the Virgins) Historic film directed by Henry de la Falaise and Gaston Glass has been restored by the UCLA Film and Television Archive. Murnau, shot in Tahiti).  More of an ethnographic travelogue and less of a romantic idyll than TABU, LEGONG (DANCE OF THE VIRGINS) also tells a sad, simple tale of love denied in Bali, Indonesia. Producer: H. de la Falaise. Titles: Hampton del Ruth. Cinematographer: William H. Greene. Editor: Edward Schroeder. Nov 21 Performance Ð Morning Concert: Kala Ramnath and Abhijit Banerjee At the Herrick Chapel, Occidental College. The Music Circle presents a morning concert with Kala Ramnath and Abhijit Banerjee. Kala Ramnath belongs to a dynasty of violinists founded by A. Narayana Iyer, a true visionary of Indian music. Her genius manifested in childhood when she began playing the violin at the age of three. The Western violin in the hands of an Indian musician of such stature as Kala can become ethereal, a passport to listening revelation. The violin is thought to have arrived in the subcontinent with Europe's colonizing powers and found a niche for itself in the South within devotional music and in the North because of its sublime vocal mimicry. Kala Ramnath has revolutionized the technique of playing the violin by taking the instrument so close to vocal music that today her violin is called ÔThe Singing ViolinÕ. Standing today amongst the most outstanding instrumental musicians in the North Indian classical genre, some of her recordings take listening pleasure to unfeasible levels. Abhijit Banerjee is a regular tabla performer at all the major music conferences in India and abroad, both as a soloist and accompanist for major artists in the North Indian as well as South Indian style. As a young child, he won many music competitions of national repute.  Besides tabla, he has received training in vocal music and in violin.  In his versatility, he has also associated with the Jazz world, accompanying Jazz musicians and groups in New York.  He is a composer and recording artist, and has conducted seminars on Indian classical music extensively at universities in the western world..11:00 AM - 1:00 PM, Herrick Chapel, Occidental College, Alumni Avenue & Campus Road, Los Angeles, CA 90041. Cost: $25 General, $15 Members, $5 Student
